著者は、OFFには友人のアメリカ人がやっている通訳、翻訳の仕事を手伝う、足立区に住む３７歳のタクシードライバー。フロントガラスから見える都会のワンシーンを切り取り、２カ国語（日・英）バージョンでお届けします。駅前にいるのは英会話学校だけではない。さて、今日の稼ぎはいくらかな？
【第１３回】
蒸し暑い！ 気温２８度。 午前１０時、私はバス停にいるバスに走る男を見た。しかしバスは走り出す。彼は遅すぎた。追いかけるのをやめる。そして私を見た！ 手を上げる。 私「ラッキー！」 彼は息を切らしながら言う。「目黒駅まで言ってください」 私「はい」再び彼は「くやしいな！ あのバス追い越して」 私「わかりました」・・そしてバスを追い越す・・・彼は落ち着いてくる・・文句を言う。「あのバスいつも遅れて来るんだよ！今日に限って早く来てる、バスはダメだね！」 私「そうですね、ダメですね」 数分後、私達は駅にダメなバスよりも早く着いた。料金１，１４０円。 彼は私のタクシーに乗って満足しただろうか・・・？ 午後、王子にて杖を持ったおばあさんが私を止めた。７０歳くらい。元気がない。私はドアを開けた。彼女はゆっくりと乗り込む。そして「スイマセン、元気プラザ知っていますか？」弱弱しい声。私「ちょっとわからな・・あっ、わかりました！ 赤羽にあるプールでしたか？」 彼女「そうです」 私「わかりました」 私は車を走らせた。思う。おばあさんは泳ぐのだろうか？・・・恐ろしい・・・元気プラザ・・いい名前だ。 元気・・とは・・健康で・・活力がある・・。私は心で叫ぶ。「泳ぐのはやめろ！危険だ！」彼女はお年寄りだ。無理をしてはいけない。 今日の売り上げ４６，０００円。

It felt muggy, the temperature was 38 degrees ℃. At 10:00AM.,I saw a man running towards a bus stop. But at that moment the bus started run. He was too late, he gave up running. Next he looked at me and hailed my cab. I got lucky. He said short of breath. “Please go to Meguro Sta.” I said “Okay.” He said again “How frustrating! Please pass the bus.” I said “All right” and passed the bus. He settled down and complains “That bus always arrives late, but this time it arrived early. It’s a bud bus.” I said “Yes, a bad bus.” Several minutes later, we arrived at the Sta. faster than the bus. That fare was 1,140 yen. Was he satisfied using my cab? In the afternoon, an old woman with cane hailed my cab in Ouji. She was about 70 years old and depressed. I opened the door and she got in slowly and she said weakly “Do you know Genki Plaza?” I answered “I don’t kno… No! I know. Is it a swimming pool in Akabane?”. She said “yes.” I said “All right.” I started to drive and thought, does she swim in the pool? … Awful … The Genki Plaza is a nice name. Genki meaning is healthy with energy. I screamed in my head “Don’t swim! She is an old woman so she shouldn’t stain herself.” I made 46,000 yen.
